Coach Kevin Tempest returns to the Mercer Island coaching staff for his fourth year as the defensive coordinator. In September, he and his wonderful wife, Laurie, celebrated their first wedding anniversary, and he is forever appreciative of her support for the coaching staff and enthusiasm for the program. Kevin grew up on Mercer Island, developing his game in the Eastside Traveling League and cutting his coaching chops during Saturday Little Dribblers. He played at Mercer Island from 1998-2002 under Hall of Fame Coach Ed Pepple, and was a starter for two Kingco championship teams, reaching the state semifinals in 2001 and the state championship game against a Rainier Beach team led by Nate Robinson in 2002. Kevin continued his basketball career and education at Lehigh University, including a berth in the 2004 NCAA tournament.
Kevin has enjoyed being a part of the progression of many driven and talented players and teams over the last four years. He is looking forward to yet another year of continuing the proud tradition of the Islander basketball program with the 2013-2014 Islanders. In addition to his time coaching, Kevin holds an MSc in Chemical Oceanography from the University of Washington and presently works as a staff scientist focused on fossil fuel energy and sustainability issues at the Seattle office of SEI-US, an environmental NGO.
