Letter from Coach Cree regarding OFFSEASON

Dear MIHS Boys Basketball Players:

Congratulations on a great season! We hope that you improved this season, both as a player and a teammate. As the Varsity head coach, I am very excited about the future of the program having seen you play this year.

As the old saying goes, “Basketball teams are made from November to March, basketball players are made from March to November.” Now is the time to start planning your offseason and ways in which you can improve. There is no shortage of opportunities out there, whether through MI Basketball or outside programs. Take the break that you need to, but when you are ready to start preparing yourself for next season, take advantage of everything you can. There’s another old saying that I like, “Opportunities don’t go away, they go to someone else!” In this competitive atmosphere both within our program and when facing other programs during the season, it is the work that you do in the offseason that gets you to the Varsity, makes you a starter or wins you a championship.

As a coaching staff, our goal is to provide as many kids with an opportunity to play over the offseason as is possible. At the most, there is the capacity to field 3 teams at one time, which provides ample but not unlimited opportunity for those who want to play. Please make it known that you want to participate and the rosters for these events will be put together as soon as possible.

On the spreadsheet below I have listed our “tentative” offseason schedule, some of which is administered by me here at MIHS (summer) and some of which is administered by the boys basketball booster club, MIBBBC (spring and fall).

I’ve also listed below some opportunities to try out for AAU teams during the Spring/Summer if you are looking to improve your game that way. There is a plethora of training opportunities out there as well if you are looking for something along those lines. Please contact me (gavin.cree@mercerislandschools.org) if you are looking for training and I can talk to you about some options.

OFF SEASON suggestions from Coach Cree

AAU Programs – Spring Tryouts:

Personally, I prefer Emerald City Basketball Academy because of the relationships that I have with the coaches, the quality of instruction and the training, which no other AAU programs provide in the same capacity as ECBA. However, I recognize that there are many teams and programs to play for and I encourage you to find what suits you best. Finding the best fit for you is important.

Friends of Hoop: http://www.fohseattle.com/tryouts.html

here are many other programs such as:

A+ Youth Program, Eastside Basketball Club, Hoopaholics, Quick Handle, Chaffey, Rotary and many more. The two listed above have the largest tryouts with the most teams, both with teams on the Eastside.
